The Glass Castle is a memoir centered around the childhood of Jeannette Walls, a successful journalist and author. Jeannette's childhood memoir begins around 1963 when she is three years old. She manages to set herself on fire and must be rushed to the hospital. To avoid paying the hospital her dad comes in the middle of the night to take her and the family does “the skedaddle” (Walls, 2005, p. Location 51). Over the next few years, the Walls family continues to skedaddle, moving around the southwestern United States. The story revolves around the various experiences Jennette has in each of the locations that she lives in. The main characters in the book are the various members of the Walls family which consists of Rex Walls, Rose Mary Walls, Lori Walls, Brian Walls, Maureen Walls, and Jeannette. When the Walls family moved, they usually did it without major planning. Looking at the 5-step decision making process (Tami James Moore, 2013), the Walls ignored logic in their decisions. For example, when they lived in Phoenix, all the family’s needs were met and yet they still moved. When moving, a 5-step decision making model makes sense, if a family does not have its needs met, alternative locations need to be found and chosen from, more often than not, the Walls moved for small unfathomable reasons. The Walls children, primarily Jeanette and Lori, excel at resolution planning, best seen in their moving from Welch to New York. Their goal is reasonable, understood, specific and measurable (Tami James Moore, 2013, p. 181) which are all the things a good goal must be. The two girls first identified that they needed to escape the family if they were to succeed in life. They then began to formulate the plan to move away, and then began to implement the plan by saving money
