“The Glass Castle” is a memoir based on the childhood of Jeannette Walls and her dysfunctional family. After living from house to house, city to city and state to state, the Walls family had endured more than the average person can even imagine. The cause of the insanity, poverty, and hardship the family was put through all leads back to 2 people, Mr. and Mrs. Walls. Although both were terrible parents, one had to be worse than the other, specifically, Rosemary. Therefore, Rosemary walls is a worse parent because she is lazy, unconcerned for the safety of her children and she is selfish. While the kids were scrounging food from the woods, picking food out of the trash to survive, they start to notice that Rosemary is putting on weight somehow, , then one night, both Brian and Jeannette heard chewing and came to the realization that it was Rosemary, after some quick questioning Rosemary says, “It’s my bad gums” (174). Brian then yanks the covers back to discover their mom is chewing on a candy bar while they starved. “ Brian yanked the covers back. Lying on the mattress next to mom was one of those huge family sized candy bars” (174). This shows Rosemary as a selfish parent because she knowingly went out of her way to lie to the kids instead of sharing the chocolate with them. Another reason for why Rosemary is a selfish parent is when both Brian and Jeanette are out scavenging for food, they come up on a 2carat diamond ring, later while getting it appraised, and realizing how much food it can buy, Jeannette asks the mom how much it’s worth to which Rosemary responds, “Doesn’t matter, because I'm keeping it” (186), to replace the one Rex had pawned shortly after they were married. This shows Rosemary extreme selfishness because she knew how much food the ring could buy for the family, but decides not to because she wanted to keep it.
