In the story, The Glass Castle written by Jeanette Walls, there is a theme of mental illness within the family, especially with the mother. Mental illnesses can be caused by many different things. In The Glass Castle, Jeanette says, “Life 's too short to care about what other people think. Besides, they should accept us for who we are”. This is an example of how mental illness might be able to change someone, but people need to embrace who they are and not let other people make assumptions about how people act because life 's too short and needs to be enjoyed. The human body cannot control specific things that go on in your brain that make people feel mentally sick. Mental illness is defined as a disorder that affects your mood, thinking, or behavior (Mayo). There are many mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, autism, ADHD, bipolar, and PTSD. In the book, The Glass Castle, Rosemary displays how much a mental issue can affect someone 's life on a daily basis and diverge it away from a normal life.
Mental illness affects each person very differently. Even though there are many different types of illnesses, each person reacts to the symptoms of each illness differently. According to a study done by the National Alliance on Mental Illness(NAMI), “1 in 5 adults experience a mental illness every year. 1 in 20 adults have a severe disorder.” Mental Illness is not something that is easy to deal with.
