Parenting The Wrong Way
Parenting is a job that someone with children must do everyday. In this job there are things parents do that could either have a positive impact on the kid or a negative impact on the kid. Its almost as if parenting has a scale where for every action it shows whether the parent is good or bad and who wouldn't want to be good at a good weight. Although most try to parent with good intentions there are also bad parents out there. In The Glass Castle, a memoir by Jeannette Walls, we examine a timeline of events from the authors childhood leading to her life as an adult. Often in the book Jeannette explains how the family struggles to get food for the week and how they even have to rewear the same clothes more than once in a week due to a lack of income their parents have. This is strange because somehow Rex seems to encourage his heavy use of alcohol by purchasing many bottles of beer and liquor. The same thing goes for Rose Mary and how she seems to frequently fulfill her needs for new art supplies although money is low in the family. According to experienced parent and writer Anamika S. list of bad parenting skills, this is a red flag. This is clear when she states, "While some cater to a child's every whim and fancy, others are excessively stingy. Studies have shown that by 7 years old, most children have already formed the money habits they will carry into adulthood" (Anamika S.). In conclusion, not only is it an act of bad parenting how Rex and Rose Mary are stingy with their money, but also the things that they spend it on as if it were a higher priority than taking care of their children. Due to irresponsible financing and the presence of physical abuse, Rex and Rose Mary are deemed bad parents. When children are growing up and learning, it is only right that they are surrounded by things that will lead them to a healthy and successful life. Children see everything and even pick up on things that are seen from their parents. So with the parenting style of Rex and Rose Mary, their children are exposed to behavior that will not do them any good in life. That is why they're bad
