In about thirty minutes, the elevator opens, and the boys welcome him to “The Glade”. Apparently, once a month a boy is sent up “The Box” as they called it, and the Gladers have no idea why or how it happens. The Running Man by Michael Bauer demonstrates the experiences of marginalising and ‘putting people in boxes’ through the lives of multiple characters in the book. The characters that interpret this idea effectively are Tom Leyton and Joseph Davidson. An outsider is an individual that is often misunderstood, and are considered misfits that are excluded and experience isolation. They are faced with prejudice and the harsh judgement and negative perception from the community. In this novel, Michael Bauer traverses these ideas through his use of characterisation, narrative elements/structure, as well as key imagery and the use of motifs.…

In the book the Maze Runner by James Dashner demonstrates the importance of sacrifice, taking risks and bravery when it comes to surviving, he does this by creating a detailed setting. When Thomas first went into the maze he saw what grew in the depths of the other side, “Thomas pushed aside the the swelling panic and set himself to work… he found a thick growth of ivy covering most of the stone” (121) Thomas wasn’t sure about what lurked on the other side of the wall, he had only seen the environment within the glade, which was just a grass field and shrubbery. Thomas risked going into the maze, because he wanted to help the runners find a way out. The author shows that a change of scenery could be the death of you but Thomas knew that…

Lilies of the field was a faith filled adapted play written by William E Barrett. This being the first play I’ve ever attended, I had little to no knowledge of what to expect, nor did I know where this department was located. When seeing this play I took into consideration, setting, actors, costumes, lights, music, how well the actors verbalized their lines, what story was trying to be told, and what the deeper message was within this story. Lilies of the field is set on a farm in the Arizona dessert, a large board was painted to portray the scene.…

So, recently I read Deborah Tannen's 1994 essay "The Triumph of the Yell", in which she laments the deterioration of modern-day debate due to its over-combative nature. She argues that framing debates as a fight between opposing extremes obstructs the truth rather than bringing it to light. While I was reading it, I couldn't help but think of the anime fan community (as well as the gaming community, and the sad state of U.S. politics) and the "debates" that take place within it. Far too often, they turn into unintelligible battles of ad hominem attacks and self-serving logic, rather than anything of real substance. Much of this boils down to the idea that anyone who doesn't agree with you is either a "fanboy" or "elitist".…

Despite the fact that the main mystery of the story is left unresolved and open, the watchers get a sense of closure because the presence of the mimes is a repeated material that gives the ending a sense of finality. We gain an insight to Thomas’s character at the beginning of the film because he pays the mimes, showing us that he can appreciate art forms and isn't frugal with his money. Furthermore, it's shown that he is disorganized and maybe not the most responsible person as his money is just carelessly found in the back seat of his car. The mimes themselves are an additional symbol for illusions versus reality. In the last scene, we watch Thomas give in to the false reality of the mimes when he “throws” the imaginary lost tennis ball back to the mimes.…
