Living in a perfect world can not always be perfect. Our society is much better than a utopia, because people today have a world full of happiness and things to enjoy everyday, people learn more about the world and change it every day because of many resources there are, and there are holidays to bring our society joy and have helped everyone through the pain in the world.
Our society today is better than Jonas’s community because people have a world full of happiness and things to enjoy everyday. On page 80 of The Giver by Lois Lowry it states, "But what happened to those things? Snow, and the rest of it?" "Climate Control. Snow made growing food difficult, limited the agricultural periods. On page 71 it expresses, “But the most conspicuous difference was the books. In his own dwelling, there were the necessary reference volumes that each household contained: a dictionary, and the thick community volume which contained descriptions of every office, factory, building, and committee. And the Book of Rules, of course.” Jonas’s community only knows about a few books, which are of descriptions of places and of rules. Today, people have books to read and help them learn about other places outside of where they live, it helps everyone expand our imagination and help them make the right decisions. Our society has libraries to go and read for pleasure, while in Jonas’s community they only have books in their homes to read. This section of page 14 states, “When something went to a committee for study, the people always joke about it. They said that the committee members would become Elders by the time the rule change was made. Rules were very hard to change.” Today our society has the opportunity to change and break the rules. This demonstrates that rules rarely get changed, in regards to the occasion that people learn more about the world they can change the rules to help make everyone lives easier. On page 116 it says, “The small child went and sat on the lap of the old woman, and she rocked him and rubbed her cheek against his. Jonas opened his eyes and lay contentedly on the bed, still luxuriating in the warm and comforting memory. It had all been there, all the things he had learned to treasure.” This quote explains that having families can make people happy because. Families allow someone to share their happiness and pain with, also family members can love them. Holidays create the opportunity for families to come together and express their feelings to each other. On page 145 it states, "The worst part of holding the memories is not the pain. It's the loneliness of it. Memories need to be shared.” With our families and friends people don’t have to keep all the pain to themselves. People can also tell them their accomplishments to make them proud and feel loved. On page 6 it says, “Who wants to be the first tonight, for feelings?" Jonas's father asked, at the conclusion of their evening meal. It was one of the rituals, the evening telling of feelings.” In Jonas’s community it is a rule for all families in order to share feelings everyday. In our society, it is not a rule for everyone to do it, but everyone can still do
