This shows that their community is open to change, and will help make the citizens lives more stable. In The Giver, when Rosemary’s memories are released, the community was shocked. Even though they soon reverted to before, Sameness (Lowry). The community did not change, and the people were not going to change due to gaining a few memories. This means that they are not open to change, and that they can’t improve their society. Also, in Haiti, they have been hit by many disasters, like the 2010 Earthquake and the 2017 Hurricane (Brown and Smith). These disasters have allowed the Haitians to become aware of what to do in crisis. They have practice, so when more disasters hit they know what to do. At the community in The Giver, a plane flew above the community, and the citizens were freaking out. They had never seen a plane fly over the community (Lowry). This shows that they have no experience, and they have not learned what to do in crisis. If this were to happen another time to them, they would not change, there would still be people worried, because they have not as much experience of what to do. Farmer’s immergence into the Haitian community during his research, alongside his educational background as a medical anthropologist and physician, contributed greatly to his approach of providing a deeply holistic understanding of HIV/AIDS in Haiti to the public for the first time (Farmer 2006:253). Through ethnographical, epidemiological and historical data, Farmer shows how the effects of social inequalities, such as racism and poverty, were the main contributors of how the suffering, illness, disease, and violence effects of HIV/AIDS were distributed amongst people in Haiti, and…

My life was changed forever when I decided to go with a group from my church on a mission trip to host a bible school in Croix des Bouquets, Haiti. I had been warned prior to going that it would change my life in a drastic way, but no one could have prepared me for the amount of brokenness and heartbreak I would witness. I could see trash and pollution in the ocean and piled up on the land, and debris still left over from the earthquake that happened in 2010. Landing in the airport was nerve-wracking.…
