The Giver Theme Essay

In the book The Giver by Lois Lowry Jonas the main character lives in “perfect world”. He learn the memories but is not aloud to tell anybody but wants to tell people. The themes are things are not as perfect as you think and there is more in the world than you are open to. The first theme is shown by the government controlling the town and the town cannot make their own decisions. The second theme is shown because there are more towns that that the people do not know about. The first theme is things are not as perfect as they seem. In Jonas’s world, no one is supposed to lie, but Jonas finds out that he is able to lie when he gets his job. “His parents did not lie, no one did unless. What if they had all been instructed you may lie (PG 71),” This shows how jonas thought the world was perfect but then he started thinking that everybody was lying to him because the giver tell him things that his parents did not. When he is watching the release he does not see what he is expecting, ”Now he cleans it up and makes it comfy Jonas said to himself. He killed it! My father killed it (PG 150),” this shows how he thought that his father made the baby comfy and then released him but instead the father kills the baby and throws it down a shoot. The world is colorless so when he sees color he does not know what it is “But suddenly Jonas had noticed, the apple had changed. Just for an instant. It had changed mid air(pg 24),” He does not know what happened because he is not open to colors and that is what happened to the apple. Jonas wants the town to change by people being able to make decisions “Not fair, the giver looked at Jonas. Well, I want to wake up in the morning and decide things(PG24),” this shows how Jonas is mad that he cannot make his own decisions like they can in other parts of the world.
