The symbolic names give the characters more depth with deeper meanings. The deeper meanings help connect the reader to the Christian symbolism by giving the reader something to relate the characters to. It gives the reader the comparison of the struggle Jonas and the Giver ae going through by connecting the characters to the man who faced the biggest struggle in life, Jesus who died on the cross. You can identify the characters and their actions more easily. When Jonas would do something, like bear the pain of the bad memories, the reader could relate him to Jesus who died for our sins, and understand Jonas’s motivation more. Since most Christians are taught what Jesus did, most Christian reader can understand the motivation of Jonas and the Giver since Christians would know where the motivation is coming from and is based off of. The names that are based from Christian origins are Jonas, who attained his name from Jesus Christ, who was chosen to bear our sins much like Jonas had to take on the painful memories by himself. The bicycle shows resemblance to the cross, symbolizing the journey Jesus took with the heavy cross and the pain Jonas had on the long trek to the top of the mountain. It shows in the end that the journey is worth it, because Jesus died for the sins of the people on earth and Jonas and Gabriel finally get to freedom with normal others. The other symbolism of the journey is Jonas and Gabriel eating is similar to the last supper in the bible. These are similar because when Jonas and Gabriel eat it is before the journey gets very hard and difficult, similar to how Jesus had the last supper before he takes the journey up to Golgotha. Another similarity is the fact that Jonas fell similar to Jesus. This is important for Jesus because it shows the human side of Jesus and that he is not an only spiritual being, which gives Jonas a more human nature that the reader can connect with seeing how hard the climb was. The sled at the top of the hill is similar to the cross at the top of Golgotha. It is similar because the sled is Jonas’ descent to a better life, much like how the cross was how Jesus was descended into hell and came up to save everyone’s soul. The whole struggle of Jonas making it to a better life and Jesus’ trip to the cross make it easier for the reader to feel empathy for the pain and struggle of Jesus and Jonas
