How would you feel to have your career chosen at twelve years old? In Lowis Lowry’s book The Giver, careers are chosen by the committee of elders. In this society, there are no choices. In Jonas society, people are assigned jobs. If our society was like that it would be bad, but if I was assigned a job it would be a nurturer. Assignments are chosen by the committee of elders who are the rulers of the society. When children are doing volunteer hours the committee of elders watch on cameras where their strength and weakness are shown. It would be horrible because we could not decide our jobs. If you do not really like something and you cannot say anything about it, and that would be upsetting. In our society if we do not like our jobs we can easily apply for a new job. That is why it would be bad if we were in Jonas society. “Thought the feeling were confused, he thought that he had liked the feelings that his mother had called stirrings (page 49).” “He remembered that upon waking, he had wanted to feel the stirrings again (page 49).” If I was assigned a job it would be probably be a nurturer. I love to help people who cannot help themselves. Seeing their smiling faces brings me joy. I come from a family that is prone to get very ill diseases, so I love to help anybody who is in need. That is why I would be chosen as a nurturer if in Jonas society. Jonas father was a nurturer who had to take care of babies and release them if they did not progress.
