In the book The Giver, the protagonist Jonas lives in a Utopian society on a future earth where the community has no feelings and emotions. At the ceremony of 12, Jonas is assigned as the Receiver of Memory, a task that only one person receives. He receives memories of love, joy, sadness, and pain and starts to feel these feelings. After a month of training, he watches his father release a baby, he is shocked to find releasing a baby means death for the baby. Jonas finds out that baby Gabe will be released and decides to escape to the place called Elsewhere. Later that night he steals his father's bike and runs away with Gabe on his back to Elsewhere. About a year later Jonas and Gabe enter a forest. At the end of the forest Jonas and Gabe approaches a house and hears music playing softly like an echo. …show more content…
One similarity is that Jonas is the Receiver of Memory. Another is that people are all assigned spouses, children, and homes. Other similarities are that in both the book and movie a baby gets released and The Giver gives Jonas the memories in the book and the movie. My final similarity is that Jonas, Asher, and Fiona are all friends in the book and the movie. While there are many similarities in the book and movie there are also many differences.
In both the book and movie The Giver there are many similarities, but there are also many differences. One is that in the book Jonas receives the memories when The Giver puts his hands on his back but in the movie he puts his hand on his birthmark (Lowry 20-21). Another difference is that in the book Jonas sees the apple change color but in the movie doesn't show that (Lowry 24). Also, another difference is that the book Fiona, Jonas, and Asher are volunteering at the House of the Old but in the movie it is at the Nurturing Center (Lowry 29-30). As you can see, there are many

It was not slamming fingers in a door, it was warfare, it was loneliness, and when Jonas felt these emotions, he knew that society must feel some pain, or else they would never learn like he did. They would never learn what real joy is without feeling some pain. The pain made Jonas wiser because he understood what the real world is like, he learned that although pain is not something cherished it is needed in society so strong feelings of joy could also be felt. Jonas figured out how to avoid getting hurt from the coldness that Gabe and him shared at the end of the book. He figured out how to keep going to Elsewhere no matter how painful it was because of hope.…

While Jonas lived in a community where knowledge about the world was hidden, in “Examination Day”, it was a society in which knowing more costs your life. The community of The Giver did not ever provide the opportunity of learning the truth, as children were ‘contained’ from their birth. Jonas did not want to keep in the knowledge as Receiver of Memories because he was overjoyed by feelings. One of Jonas’ rules “Do not discuss your training with any other member of the community, including parents and Elders” (Lowry 86). This is meaningful because the communities’ only goal of a Receiver was to prevent information from leaking out to the community.…
