The Giver Sameness Essay

Sameness is bad Imagine a world where everyone is the same there is no holidays or change of season. Just simply everything is the same. The Giver is a dystopian novel written by Lois Lowry, everyone is the same except the protagonist (Jonas). He can see colors and everyone else can’t, there is also Gabe and the Giver they all have the same color of eyes. Jonas, Gabriel, and the Giver are unique. They all have the same houses practically everything is the same. If sameness was brought into today’s society it would be bad because people wouldn’t be able to make their own choices, be able to experience the richness of life or, be able to experience real emotions. By depriving of choices the creators of Jonas’s society the committee of Elders chooses everything for them. Each family unit gets two children one male and one female. For example when Lily asked if they could keep Gabe her mom told her she knew the rules, “Two children-one male, and one female- each family unit.” (10) The committee of Elders also chose what jobs the kids got but as they matured they would move to jobs that suited their own interest and skills, “But with guidance as they developed self-confidence and maturity they moved on to other jobs gravitating toward those that would suit their own interests and skills.”(26) …show more content…
People in this community have never experienced different seasons or different holidays. In fact everyone is almost always the same, the same routine every day. The only people in the community who get to experience all those types of things are Jonas and the Giver (the receivers). They are special/unique they can see color unlike the rest of the people in the community. “I have many other memories of family, and holiday’s and happiness, of love.” (119) They have never experienced Christmas. They’ve never even experienced snow or riding sleds except Jonas, in fact they’ve never seen
