In the novel, The Giver a controlled thing is called "sameness". It keeps the community from many dangerous things but also holds the community from having many things they should have like weather changes. Sameness chooses for the people like spouses and families. They're supposed to be a perfect community but they hold many secrets and lies from the community. It doesn't allow people to choose their job but the committee study kids as they grow, and they usually get a perfect job for what you like. Sameness made weather control because it can ruin their agriculture but this takes people's abilities to have fun in things like snow.(p.82-83).Since the community doesn't get to experience this stuff their tolerance for new things is very low. They don't know what to do since they've never seen it before or been in it. The committee looks to the receiver and giver for advice. Which isn't good because they don't get to experience the normal way to live. Jonas is starting to understand that Sameness is negative and is taking away experiences from the people of the community. Jonas knows that there are many advantages that Sameness does, it keeps people from being murdered with weapons and other things. Then there's lots more disadvantages. There's all those memories of when people are killed and then those where you can be in deep pain due to injuries. Then there's disadvantages when people are given people to love. The community don't get to really understand what true love is with given spouses and family units.(p.127).
