Jonas suffers hunger, pain, and loneliness. Most people have enough to eat, but those of us who don’t have enough can relate to Jonas when it says “At night, while gabriel slept beside him, Jonas lay awake, tortured by hunger” (173). We do not want people to experience this pain. Unfortunately some people experience this. To add more than just hunger Jonas has physical pain. He also has the memories of war. “Jonas’s ankle was twisted and his knees were scraped” (171) This not all Jonas experiences. Because he helped the community by leaving, he sacrificed his own well being. During the peak of his trial, when his pain and loss exells, he remembers “his parents and sister. He remembered his friend, Asher and Fiona. He remembered the giver” (178) when the book says these lines I imagine that Jonas began to feel immense despair. In his choice to leave, Jonas leaves all his memories. The Giver explains this when he tells Jonas, “‘If you escape that will mean that the community will have to bear the burden themselves.’” (155 & 156). This gives the community freedom. Jonas values this freedom with every part of his being. “his life was of no worth” (155). Like Jonas we value families too. When Jonas leave he use his value of family. “He had taken gabriel” (166). Gabriel release became imminent, so Jonas took him. This gives Gabriel more freedom because he does not get released and releasing kills
