“Without freedom of choice, there is no creativity. Without creativity, there is no life.” -Benjamin Spock. Life without choice, isn’t really life at all. Human beings need the freedom of choice to be distinctive and different from everyone else. “It is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences.” - Audre Lord. The Giver’s community is entirely against differences and has achieved ultimate sameness. Thus, not preparing them for unexpected problems which occur throughout life.

In The Giver, the Elders decided to remove all “harmful” memories of the past from the entire community, and gave the memories to someone called The Receiver of Memory. The receiver's job is to hold all memories of the past, while at the same time, he/she isn’t able to share any of the memories to his family and friends. “The worst part of holding the memories is not the pain. It’s the loneliness of it. Memories need to be shared.”(Lowry, pg 193) The community, has no knowledge of the past’s disasters and problems. Therefor, they don’t know how to solve these problems if they come up again in the future. So, without memories, serious panic and chaos could occur when an unknown event happens in the future.
