Most of the residents have never even seen a live animal. The fantasy idea of elephants going extinct is closer than you might think. This Dystopian future is a perfect example of why elephants need to be protected. Elephant poaching has become a major issue, especially in Africa, where they are mainly hunted. A factor contributing to elephant extinction is the sale of ivory, taken from their massive tusks. Should there be a ban on all domestic sale, import, and …show more content…
Adversaries believe that a lack of elephants can hardly affect other species. In fact, African elephants are essential to the survival of other animals who rely on specific conditions to thrive. Elephants have been proven to be crucial to the habitats of other animals. In the article “Endangered Species Can They Be Saved?”, It is reported that African elephants may not be the only ones in danger. Asian elephants’ habitats are disappearing as a result of the loss of African elephants (Allman, Schrof). The tusks of Asian elephants are typically too small to be recognized and hunted by poachers so the main reason they too are disappearing is because of the astronomical drop of their African brethren. It has been reported by activists that elephants create salt licks and water holes that are used by other animals (About the African Elephant). In the article “Endangered Species Can They Be Saved?”, it is reported that elephants open up grassland and clear the savanna for other grazers (Allman, Schrof). The bears and the gorillas are the biggest attraction and people love to watch the baby elephant following its mommy. What you don’t remember is anyone telling you about the elephant poaching and that the existence of elephants is in jeopardy. I remember the first time that I was told that elephants were in danger. Elephants have similar human emotions and experiences as us, especially when considering their great mental capacity. “When an elephant dies, its family members engage in intense mourning and burial rituals, conducting weeklong vigils over the body” (Siebert 355). Through these actions and rituals, it becomes clear that elephants have the ability to love, care, and grieve for one another. This is extremely similar to how humans perform last rites for one another at their time of death to show their emotions towards another member of their species and society. “Young elephants are raised within an extended, multitiered network of doting female caregivers” (Siebert 355).…

The vast systems of control infiltrate all aspects of human life in the young adult novel, from the institutional to the biological, and thus the novel clearly continues an established dystopian tradition of critiquing totalitarianism and emphasizing the importance of individual freedom and privacy. The Giver, (1993) winner of the Newbery Medal of 1994, by Lois Lowry concentrates on situating the tradition and characteristics of dystopian fiction, to showcase that the novel continues an established dystopian tradition. The tradition and features are established through discussions on classic dystopian novels and their characteristics such as totalitarian collectivism, the falsification of history and memory, the persistent threat of punishment or death and the lack of awareness of the oppression, which effectively prohibits people from revolting against or opposing the oppressing authority. The Giver, as most dystopian texts written for young adults, follows the themes and traditions of dystopian literature.…
