A Community With No Harm
A community in which Lois Lowry created doesn’t have love, or emotion. It’s impossible right? No, not for Jonas’ community. Everyday before he becomes a Twelve he is left with black and white color, no emotions like love, anger, depression, and the most riveting thing, no hunger or crime. Jonas travels through an “incision” so he can give memories which are important to the community. The Giver is a very inspiring book about a boy who learns to overcome fears and sameness. As Jonas learns to take risks so he can obtain love, and perseverance for his community, he grows emotionally. As Jonas gives the memories to his community, he also gives them love. For example, when Jonas was freezing and about to quit he pushed through, “Inside his freezing body, his heat surged with hope… and with his whole being willed himself to stay atop the sled, clutching gabriel, keeping him safe” (Lowry 224). Perseverance is significant because without Jonas trying his very best and not giving up, he saves himself, Gabe, and his Community. Additionally, when Jonas wanted to turn around he didn't, and tried really hard to continue to strive forward, ”...he had made the wrong one: the choice to leave. And now he was starving.But if he had stayed… his thoughts continued.If he had stayed he would have starved in other ways. He would have lived a life hungry for feelings, for color, for love...So there had not really been a choice” (Lowry 217-218). For a sample, Jonas fled his Community, and he discovered new great things (which was risky), “All of it was new to him. After a life of Sameness and predictability, he was awed by the surprises that lay beyond each curve of the road”(Lowry 217). Since Jonas took risks to grow stronger, and better emotionally, now he doesn't have to live a life of Sameness anymore. For another illustration, Jonas wanted a change, so he took a precise decision to escape, and save the Community; “Once he’d yearned for a choice. Then when he had a choice, he’d made the wrong one” ( Lowry 217). Jonas obviously made the correct choice in choosing to continue his journey to Elsewhere.
