The Giver Dystopian Society

In the novel The Giver a boy Jonas is placed in a dystopian society where sameness is key to having an “ideal” society. Jonas learns that there is a lot more about his community to be discovered that the leaders have not released. In anger and curiosity Jonas wanders away from his community to look for “else where”. There are many differences between Jonas’s society and the one you and I live in today. Jonas's society was a dystopian society because of these rules and the very limited and almost non existent freedom. When Jonas realizes he has a chance to change his situation he does and runs away with a baby boy named Gabriel who was scheduled to be released. One thing that is drastically different is the way age is recognized. In Jonas’s …show more content…
In The Giver your wife and or husband is chosen for you when you are ready for a family which is called a family unit. In addition to this you have to apply for a child and you can not create your own. If a birth mother gives birth to a twin the heavier one is allowed to live and the lighter one is killed or released. The people who are trained to release do not know that what they are doing is wrong. Only one male and one female is allowed. This ties in with the idea of sameness in the community. This sameness is what makes his society a dystopia. Here in the U.S.A we have the freedom to choose to have as many kids we want and we can marry whoever we choose too and if we are not satisfied you can even get a divorce. If twins are born than the child that weighs more after a certain time the heavier one is allowed to live while the lighter one is killed or released. This is because we allowed to be different from everyone else around us. This is why America is filled with many different races, languages, and …show more content…
In Jonas’s society the rules are very strict. There is only room for 3 mistakes in his society and after your third you are “released” or killed. There is a rule that restricts the age you are allowed to ride a bike. A rule that Jonas dislikes is the rule that snacks are not be allowed to be eaten or hoarded outside the recreation center. At the ceremony of eights children's toys or comfort objects are taken away because the community believes they are too old for them. All of these rules are made by the elders or the leaders of the community and are impossible to be changed. In our society we have many rules in the constitution but they are not as strict as the ones in The Giver. For example in our society we can learn to ride a bike at any age we want too. We can buy as much as food as we want and eat as much as we can. Children can hold on too their toys until the parents decide they are too old and not a elder like Jonas’s society. Jonas hated the fact that if you didn't fit in you were released no matter if even if it was being underweight by just one

This writing is about comparing and contrasting about our society and to Jonas's Society. Our society is better than Jonas’ society because in his society they have a lot of rules and they were controlled by sameness. The rules are very strict like : members of the community are not allowed to leave the community, No one is supposed to have strong feelings and more strict rules that keep the people in Jonas’ the same. One of the difference between our society to Jonas’ society was when children turned twelve years old (Jonas’ Society) ,they were celebrating the ceremony called “The Ceremony of Twelve” that means that they will become “adult” and they were assigned you to work (they pick your job), It says on the book is that , ”The initial speech at ceremony of twelve was made by the chief elder, the leader of the community was elected every ten years .The speech was much same each year recollection of the time of childhood and period of preparation, the coming responsibilities of adult life ,the profound importance of assignment ,the seriousness of training to come”.…

Jonas is the main character in “The Giver”, he lives in a “perfect” futuristic society. A society where everything is regulated, or controlled, so that nothing unexpected happens. Everything is assigned in life such as family units, jobs, etc. and all rules are followed. This community has a river near by, has similar house and buildings, and has an open land to “Elsewhere” but there are no colors, wars, hunger, true pain, emotions, animals, hills, not even cars, instead they ride bikes that were given to them at the age of nine.…

The book, The Giver, is about a community that lives based on strict, assigned rules. There are three major rules that I disagree with such as having other people making choices for you, the certain amount of children that you can have, and not having the privileges to take things home. I do not agree with Jonas’s community. One major rule that I disagree with is only having a certain amount of children that you birthed.…

Can you imagine a world in which there’s no color, weather, or sunshine. Imagine you not being able to have your own children, well in the dystopian novel The Giver by Lois Lowry. The protagonist, Jonas has to deal with this for 12 years and doesn’t begin to realize that something in his society is wrong until he is chosen to be the next Receiver for his community. This is very different from our modern day society. While Jonas’s society is emotionless, experiences sameness, and doesn’t have the freedom to choose, modern day society is free to love and celebrates individuality.…

For example, when Jonas was at the ceremony of twelves, the Chief Elder said, ¨This is the time, when we acknowledge your differences. You elevens have spent all your years till now learning to fit in, but today we honor your differences¨(65). This being the first time in their lives where their differences were celebrated taught Jonas that differences are something that should be accepted and honored not something that should be ignored. One of the final themes taught in The Giver is the importance of freedom of choices.…

The book, Fahrenheit 451, written by Ray Bradbury, and the movie, The Giver, directed by Phillip Noyce, each portray the story of a community that is trying to achieve or maintain a form of utopia. Although there are many differences in the way utopia is achieved and ultimately the way it falls apart, the peace and harmony desired from the utopian world is the same. In Fahrenheit 451, firemen are the people who have the job of hunting down and burning any books found in the community. In The Giver, there is no war, no crime, and no hunger; every person has a job and a purpose that is determined by the leaders to be the most suited for them. This essay makes a critical comparison between the book, Fahrenheit 451, and the movie, The Giver.…
