The story begins when Jonas is chosen for the Receiver of Memory. After many weeks of training, the Giver shows Jonas a video of a release, of a newborn, and Jonas goes in to shock because his dad killed someone. Which shows Jonas that his town is limiting the truth that people know about everything. The conflict come to life when Jonas figures out his society is stopping people from having their freedom by taking the color out of everything, taking feelings and memories, and taking peoples individuality along with that. When Jonas learns that his town is doing this he is distraught and decides to try and change it. Jonas and the Giver make a plan to give the town its freedom back by Jonas leaving the community.
