The Giver Character Analysis

Could you imagine what it would be like if you lived in a world without any color at all? And everything is just the same grey hue? Well, this is the world that Jonas, the main character of The Giver, written by Lois Lowry, lives in. The book, The Giver, is a book where everyone lives in a community, where everything is perfectly controlled. This world is controlled by a group of people called the Elders. In the world that Jonas lives in, it would not fall into the category of utopia. Overall, the place that Jonas lives in is not ideal because there is no color, no information for the citizens, and no freedom either. In the community, there is no color. No citizens can expand their knowledge. When Jonas enters the room of the receiver for the first time, he sees that all of the walls in the room of The Giver are covered by bookshelves, filled to the ceiling by books. “He had never known that other books existed.(Lowry, 94)” The narrator says about Jonas. In a world with no information, the leaders, such as the Elders, and the people who rule over the Elders, can control the whole community because the community knows nothing at all. They cannot even understand simple terms that we know in our world. An example of this is when Jonas is about to be given his first memory by The Giver, during the first meetup. He asks him some terms that are in the memory, which is about sledding down a hill. “...Or a sled? Runners?.(page 99)” “No sir.” Jonas replies, when he is asked if he knows these terms or not. The problem is that these are simple terms that are being said and everyone should know them. Information is banned by the leaders because memories may arise, and they don’t want that to happen. But people deserve to have information, and they deserve to have memories as well, so they can know about the world and can’t be controlled by their
