In Lois Lowry’s story The Giver, Jonas becomes the receiver of memory. He is the most important factor of the community. The Receiver gets all of the old memories from the old world. The memories can include pain, suffering, joy, or, happiness. He will soon know what it takes to become the receiver and how it will mature him.
In the beginning, Jonas was quite responsible for his age of eleven. He was different than the other community members though. All of his friends knew what they wanted to become at the ceremony of twelves; he did not. He was absolutely clueless. Jonas was mostly concerned about school, the rules, and places he volunteers at with his friend Fiona. When he wasn't playing games with her and Asher he was with Fiona volunteering
