How could you live without the memories of the past? In the book, The Giver, the community didn't have any memories of emotions, color, and more. The receiver was the only person who knew what had happened in the past. Jonas was chosen to become the new receiver and had the honor to knowing what the past held. In the book, The Giver, by Lois Lowry, by having the knowledge of the memories, Jonas was able to form opinions, fears, and dreams.
Knowing the memories and having the power, can change your opinions. “It's choosing that's important, isn't it?” (123). By having the power to choose, you can either make the right choices or the wrong choices. In the community, the people didn't have the power to choose because of sameness.
