In The Giver by Lois Lowry, Jonas lives in a dystopia. According to the passage “Utopias and Dystopias” , “a dystopia is a term used to describe a utopian society in which things have gone wrong.” In jonas’ community, there are many flaws such as Lack of Knowledge, Sameness, and Complete control. Lack of Knowledge can be a memory from the past, but not the future. Sameness is something that is identical to another thing , but with no color. Complete control is is something that you can not choose yourself. Jonas’ community has many flaws one of them being lack of knowledge. Sameness was decided in the community a long time ago to block out the pain. With sameness everything is identical, to when you wake up in the morning to when you go to sleep at night. In addition, sameness has no color at all. With no color you can not tell physical features such as hair, eyes, and skin color. In The Giver , they have something called complete control. Complete Control is a mixture of many things. According to The Giver, you can not choose your own spouse. A spouse is a parent or guardian, which is given to you by the elders. Spouse’s is given two kids per family unit. A spouse is in control of telling the children what to do and what not to do. Such as a curfew, a curfew is a time to let a kid know that they need to go to sleep. In conclusion, Jonas’ community in The Giver planned to be a Utopia, but is a Dystopia, because of lack of knowledge, sameness, and complete control. This causes the community to have many flaws. Flaws contain many disadvantages in the community. Such as lack of knowledge has limited education. Also, sameness is when everything is identical, but you can not see any color.
