This could include things like our jobs, where we live, who we will live with, and when and what to eat. In The Giver community, everything that I just listed is what all citizens live by and must follow. If we follow everything to the dot, then why have us? If we were to have everything decided for you, what makes you different from a machine?
In The Giver, there are speakers in which everyone listens for the morning announcement or if there is a crisis, what to do. These speakers tell the citizens what to do and they all do it immediately. On page 2, the speaker told the citizens to seek the nearest building IMMEDIATELY and to LEAVE YOUR BICYCLES WHERE THEY ARE. They did this because there was a plane that flew over the community. Almost instantly everyone did what they were told and headed to shelter and watched as the plane passed over the community. In a way, the people in the community are safe. There is almost no arguing with the rules and there is a lot of peace. But they have no free
