Movies and books both interpret a story differently, usually you would say a movie is better than a book because you don't have to read and wait for something exciting to happen. When you read the original story; novel, you start to realize that the movie version of the story is missing elements that are vital to the story or maybe they really used that element very well throughout the story. It is up to you to determine if they used it wisely. Throughout the film and movie of "The Giver" the colors and characters expressions make the story even better but however, the film and novel both share differences and similarities.”The Giver" film and novel both use colors and character's expressions …show more content…
In The Giver film, directed by Phillip Noyce, we are acquainted with Jonas who is riding his bike and he is looking up at the trees and seeing the bright colors of green and the sky. Then his friends Asher and Fiona tag along and continue with the story. My point is that Jonas already started seeing this color but in the book, Lois Lowry had to build up her characters to allow the colors to start popping into place. Furthermore, Jonas saw Fiona's hair color in the beginning of the movie when Asher, Fiona, and Jonas were i the triangle with the waterfall. However, in the book Jonas saw Fiona's hair in the middle of the book when they were walking to school. In the film, the colors are ubiquitous throughout the entire movie because our point of view is through Jonas and we can see everything that he does throughout the film. We also see what the community is doing and how they react to the situation. Also, in the film, Jonas saw a rainbow in the waterfall and was confused on why no one else could see it. Plus, in the film, we were able to see the Fiona cared for Jonas and showed feelings even though when she refused to help Jonas she did show confusion and anger. Also at the end of the movie, Jonas and Gabe both rode down the mountain but the different part is that in the film, Jonas saw a cabin that he saw in the Giver's memory. But in the book, Jonas went to …show more content…
In “the Giver” by Lois Lowry, on page 21, it states, "Now, seeing the newchild and its expression, he was reminded that the light eyes were not only a rarity but gave the one who had them a certain look — what was it? Depth, he decided; as if one were looking into the clear water of the river, down to the bottom, where things might lurk which hadn’t been dis- covered yet. He felt self-conscious, realizing that he, too, had that look." This quote from the novel really helps to explain how the character's expressions in the book and movie are alike because in the quote, Jonas sees a newchild and he couldn't really explain what the expression was. It also helps me understand that Jonas believes that even he has the look and that explains that the community also has the look. If Jonas and the newchild both have this weird look to their face they probably are being trained to look a certain way such as vague and blank looks and taking pills to not experience that look. Also in the Giver film, we can obviously see that the community kinda has this weird look that is unexplainable. The significance of my point is that the film and novel both tried to incorporate these unexplainable feelings, emotions, and expressions because they want the audience to try to relate that same feeling with the novel and it really is amazing how they try to replicate these expressions that the community is giving
