The Giver And The Last Book In The Universe

Being bilingual i've always had many questions, what language do i think in? what language do i dream in? Did i learn to read in spanish or English first? As far as I know (according to my parents) I learned how to read ,speak and write in Spanish first.Unfortunately, my father was never able to learn how to read but my mother did. My mother and 3 siblings took turns reading to me almost every night. When i started school apparently i took matters into my own hands and learned how to read short stories and demanded i read myself a bedtime story.

Although i don't remember having a favorite book as a child i do remember falling in love with two books in middle school The Giver and The Last Book In The Universe. Both of these books meant so much to me because I read The Giver first and it talked about a world with no color or emotion and it absolutely captivated me and showed me how amazing reading was. Followed by The Last Book In The Universe which talked about a world with no books and braindead entertainment. One book gave me the love of reading and the other gave me nightmares about someday losing it.

Most of the books i've read have been turned into “chick flicks” and haven't been original. now a day i enjoy children's books more than any others because there's so much unknown with each turn of the page. Also, most of the time that i read a children's book i have an audience who is so excited to find out what's next! This semester i hope to gain confidence in imitating the voices done in the book. I remember loving when my teacher would “meow” like a cat or talk like a grandma, i'd like to be able to give my future students that

Unlike the literature I am required to read during the school year, the books that I read for pleasure are more focused on issues that can relate to one's actual life. The books I read for pleasure are more of a release. For example, I read "Life of Pi" by Yann Martel to get a better view on the idea of intangible belief and dry factuality. I enjoyed "Fahrenheit 451" by Ray Bradbury because it provided a new perspective on the idea of censorship. I also read "To Kill a Mockingbird" and "Of Mice and Men" in order to receive valuable insight on the idea of loss of innocence.…

“Spanglish” English such a complex language something spoken by many, and yet many others yearn to learn it. That was me a young and fragile girl who yearned to understand a foreign language, a language that other kids spoke. My first memory of reading was when I was little, about 4 or 5, and my mom would read to me when I was going to bed. By far my favorite book that she would read to me was “Where The Wild Things Are”. I loved the way the booked looked with the faded looking colors that made it look old and I loved the pictures of the wild things and how the kid was the king and everyone listened to him and I just loved it.…

My parents have said to work hard and do my best in school. I never understood why until I got older. The reason they told me to do my best in school was because they wanted me to think about school and my future. Both of my parents didn't get the chance to go to college. They both came to the United States looking for what most people come to the United States for ‘The American Dream’, they wanted a place where they could raise their children and find a stable job.…

The first book that I thoroughly enjoyed reading was Star Girl written by Jerry Spinelli. I read this book in my sixth-grade class, and although it was not my first chapter book I’ve read, it was a book that I have the earliest recollection of reading. This is because it was the first book that grasped my interest and I fully understood the characters, the plot, and the main idea of the story. I was able to make connections with the characters because they dealt with similar things that as a new middle school student I was dealing with as well. For example, in the story Star Girl, the main character is starting a new school, so she’s trying to fit in by making new friends and joining some extracurricular activities.…

Introduction The purpose of this study is to learn how and to what extent bilingualism in early childhood (from ages 0-5) affects cognitive intelligence later in a person’s life as reflected by the academic performance at the university level. This an important and relevant topic for human development and education as schools are becoming increasingly more diverse, and there are more students from different cultural backgrounds speaking a multitude of languages. Many of these students will have parents who are native speakers of non-English languages who are faced with the dilemma to either teach their child in two languages during early childhood, one being English or raise him or her to speak only one language, English.…
