Although feelings are a very prominent aspect of the land of Care-a-lot (the Care bears home), The Giver’s community shows a specific focus on the sharing of feelings as well. In Care Bears, there are two children named Kim and Jason who are orphans. After they were left by their parents, they said, “We will never love anyone ever again.” They were clearly scarred from this horrible experience they faced with loved ones in the past. The Giver shows a very similar history with his daughter. He is worried about making the same mistakes with Jonas that he made with his own daughter, so he tries to impose a distance. More than anything, all of these characters don’t want repeat bad situations they faced in their pasts. Another set of characters that show similarities is Nicolas and Jonas’s dad. In Care Bears, Nicolas is being controlled by an evil spirit to do her evil bidding. Nicolas either doesn’t realize he is doing wrong or is just blocking it from his mind. This is very similar to the way Jonas’s father behaves. He regularly executes babies as part of his job for the community, but doesn’t acknowledge the wrong in doing so. A statement that Nicolas once said (seemingly trying to convince himself) is very accurate for both characters. He said, “I’m not doing anything wrong.” Both characters are seemingly unaware of their wrongdoings and do nothing to really analyze their own actions.
