The Giver And A Christmas Memory Analysis

Dragons, witches, princesses, knights. These are the imaginary friends in so many children's lives. For young adults, those fairy tale characters give away to darker characters and more realistic situations. However, what do they all have in common? They live in stories. Two stories that are interesting are The Giver by Lois Lowry, and "A Christmas Memory" by Truman Capote. When Jonas in The Giver turns 12, he is picked for something special and finds out some secret things. Buddy in "A Christmas Memory" bakes fruit cakes with his distant cousin when life takes a twist. While there are some obvious similarities, both authors approach these stories specifically with characters, tone, and point of view, in different ways.

The main characters of both stories are similar because they are both helpful. In, The Giver, the author does not directly say that Jonas enjoys helping out, but readers can infer that through his actions. For example, when Jonas was getting ready to help out at elder's housing

Throughout, The Giver, the author uses an ironic tone. When the kids are young they all get a comfort animal. Jonas's was different though "Many of the comfort objects, like Lily's, were soft, stuffed, imaginary creatures. Jonas's had been called a bear" (Lowry). We know that elephants and bears are real, so then we think about a world where they exist, but not as real animals. Then we start to wonder what is going on. On the other hand, there is Buddy in "A Christmas Memory", the story has a nostalgic tone. In the beginning it says "A coming of winter morning more than twenty years ago" (Capote). He is the narrator of the story, and the whole time he is just telling about his past, 20 years ago that he misses. He tells about it in a way that shows he is looking back to a time that he misses. He misses his cousin and how she was there for him, he just wants her back. All in all, the stories have a different tone in some
