Jonas could feel it. He did not know what he felt exactly, he just felt it. He knew his feet were cold and numb. He knew he was dirty and disheveled. He definitely knew he was starving, but this. This was new. This was a different type of gnawing. A rougher type. He felt it whenever he wanted to just lie down and sleep forever. Whenever he began to give up. It was a feeling only to be described as a longing. A longing for Elsewhere. A longing for warmth. A longing for what he knew was coming. He just thought that it needed to come quicker, before he loses that longing and falls, just like the snowflakes surrounding him. If he did not, he knew the end would be near. He pushed the bike in long strides, ignoring the throbbing pain in his ankle. All that could be heard was the sound of wind in the dark of the night and occasional whimpers from Gabe. “Gabe, I have a story.”, Jonas started. often using stories as a distraction for the young child from his freezing, starving state. All the small boy replied with was a simple noise of delight. “It all started with a girl, A girl named Fiona. Though she be but little, she was fierce. Now, she was put on restrictions, just like all the others, No color, no choice,”, Jonas paused. …show more content…
Stuck, he thought, stuck in ice. Moving slowly, trudging through the snow, Jonas found himself stopping. He fell to his knees startling Gabriel. He was deep in thought. He thoughts about Gabriel and how he has lost his curiosity. He thought about his mother and he thought about his father and their relationship. He thought about Lily, Fiona, and Asher and their lives without him. Then he thought about the Giver. The Giver would not like to see Jonas here, about to fall into a dark sleep he would never wake from. And that was all he needed. The Giver would never let him give up, so he can not do this now. Jonas rose from the snow. To stop now would lead to his demise, and he wouldn't do that to
