It is important to retain memories, and pass them down to later generations, in order to learn from them. Additionally, people can be inspired by memories. In THE GIVER, the people and elders of the community could not realize how abnormal the society they were living in was, because they had no memories of the past. Also, although The Giver was asked important questions due to the memories he preserved, most of the issues or questions that came up were just asked to the elders, who lacked this knowledge. Furthermore, many memories give us happiness and joy, which were missing in the community. Even though The Giver also retained memories of pain and suffering, it is important to have a balance. (Moreover, if everyone in the community would share the painful memories, it would not be a burden for the giver.
