The Giver is a dystopia because they can’t see color or hear music, the world is just a bland mix of silence and gray. The reason I know this is because when Jonas starts to see beyond, the giver tells him that he is starting to see the color red, and the giver later tells Jonas that he first heard music instead of saw colors. That means that nobody in the community can see colors or hear music.
