She thought that going to the cops would be useless because women suffer abuse on such a regular basis that it seems commonplace and will not be prosecuted. Although she will not contact the police, her messed up childhood gives her the perfect ideal on how to put revenge into situations. I learned the scarring effect of Arab culture, including “Honor Killings”. In the story, a family attempts to murder their own daughter, to restore their social status. It is disheartening to find that such an unforgiving punishment still exists today. I also learned the significance of the hijab and its representation of female modesty as well as the patriarchal nature of Arab society where females are not able to leave home alone, marriages are arranged to much older men, and the mindset is that a woman is here only to serve a male. The quote “What is a man, if he cannot control the women in his life?” represents the mentality of the story, a man’s control over a woman’s thoughts and…

In the movie The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Lisbeth Salander exemplifies the strength, loyalty and courage of a modern woman who has always suffered mistreatment and prejudice. Moreover, this movie is based on the first book of the trilogy Millennium, created by Stieg Larsson. Both, the book and the movie, narrates the story of Mikael Blomkvist, a journalist of the magazine Millennium, whose credibility is questioned when he publishes an article about a business man named Hans-Erik Wennerström, declaring he is involved in corruption and money laundering. Decided to disappear from the eye of the storm for a while, and trying to clean up his name, Mikael accepts an unusual freelance job from Henrik Vanger. Basically, the job consists in the…

This made Anna think twice about doing the best for her health. This situation exemplifies the larger structural violence against women where they are defined and often limited in their actions and decisions by their bodies. Layla’s family faced a different form of structural violence that is faced by many people of lower socioeconomic class in Egypt. They struggle to find the money to pay for treatment for diseases. Layla’s brother didn’t get treatment for his Hepatitis C, because he simply did not have enough money (Hamdy and Nye, 2017: 65).…

Even though most women in the world have equal rights in a lot of countries, women’s rights are still an issue. Women who are born in countries where their rights almost don’t exist are mentally hurt and these women possibly become unstable. In Ronald Dahl’s “Lamb to the Slaughter”, and in the short story by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, “The Yellow Wallpaper”, the abuse of men towards their wife affects the women’s mental state negatively. In fact, people tend to underestimate those who seem to be weak which leads to abuse, mental or physical, and to negative consequences.…

The novel Silver Sparrow by Tayari Jones unveils a breathtaking story about a man’s deception, a family’s complicity, and the two teenage girls caught in the middle. Dana is the secret daughter while Chaurisse is the legitimate daughter. The novel presents a wide variety of instances where intersections between gender, race, or class influence a character’s life. This novel shows how the identity of people change through the course of life and how it affects their interaction with other people in life. Dana is the daughter of James Wtherspoon and Gwendolyn.…

As a result of the Taliban’s rule restricting women, men in the homes gained power over women. Abuse is common and Hosseini reveals this through Mariam’s relationship with Rasheed. For instance, when Mariam makes rice and Rasheed is displeased with it, he forces her to chew on pebbles. Rasheed often beats and verbally abuses Mariam even though she is often found doing exactly what he asked of her. This type of abuse is what women in Afghanistan often suffer through.…

Yet, Mariam does not choose impulsively, but makes a calculated decision to kill her husband, even “making sure sure that Rasheed looks at Mariam in her eyes so that he can acknowledge her action” (Hosseini 253). Even though Laila and Mariam are so different in personality and upbringing, they are both capable of resistance when necessary, which suggests that we are all intrinsically capable of fighting for ourselves and for those we care about (Gordon, Areej). Hosseini’s protagonists are representative of the women of Afghanistan as a whole- despite living through years of oppression and inequality, Mariam and Laila, and by extension, all women of Afghanistan, are neither helpless nor passive,…

Hassan describes one moment of Taliban brutality by writing, “ He was screaming at her and cursing and saying the Ministry of Vice and Virtue does not allow women to speak loudly” (Hosseini). This shows how women have little to no say in Afghanistan’s society and are completely looked down upon. Women can not speak loudly because that is against the virtues while on the other hand, it is completely fine for a man. This is also another example of gender inequality and the complete bias towards men in…
