Personal Narrative Essay: The Girl Next Door

The Girl Next Door Her name was Katie. It still is; she’s still alive. She just no longer lives next door. Katie, now 25, has 5 years on me. I remember her as average height, thin, with long brown hair, dark brown eyes and a larger than average nose. While I grew up, we played together all the time. At fifteen, she received the diagnosis of water on the brain (the laymen’s term for a build-up of fluids in the brain due to some blockage). She got caught smoking weed in the wooded area behind my house the week before. On this particular evening, she planned to go out to a party with one of her friends. Her mom, a nurse, stayed levelheaded enough to call 911 and perform CPR until they

She answers almost every question, more like she was writing it, not saying it, with an indifferent tone. Her high school experience was divided, on one side there was the small desert town, and on the other was the rich sophisticated San Diego suburb. She was a grumpy lady who sat outside in her rocker and would get mad if we accidentally kicked the ball in her yard, or if we even stepped foot in her yard. She was nice sometimes, but most days she was very mean and rude. She used to not hand out candy to us if we were not under the age of 4 she always thought Halloween was for the little toddlers to enjoy not us 5 and up children. We never really talked much to her because she was so mean, but I still was never hateful to her, rather than being hateful I was super kind to her.…
