Similarities Between Jim And Della In The Gift Of The Magi

Improved Essays
In the story, “The Gift of the Magi” by O. Henry the characters Della and Jim, the protagonists, do many things out of their love for each other and many times make careless decisions because of it. Jim and Della sacrifice their most prized possessions for each other, Della grows her hair long so Jim will ‘love her more’, and Jim works in an undesirable job for little pay for Della. The most obvious example of Jim and Della doing things out of love is they sacrifice their most prized possessions for each other (to get each other gifts), and in turn what they got went with that sacrificed possession. Della and Jim aren't rich, but they both have a very prized possession. The first is Della’s hair, “Della knew her hair was more beautiful …show more content…
“Also there was a name beside the door: “Mr. James Dillingham Young.” When the name was being placed there, Mr. James Dillingham Young was being paid $30 a week. Now when he was being paid only $20 a week, the name seemed too long and important. It should perhaps have been “Mr. James D. Young.”” I think that this shows that Jim (Mr. James Dillingham Young) Isn't fond of his long title or of his job but still works in it to make money to make a living with Della. “While the lady of the home is slowly growing quieter we can look at the home. Furnished rooms at a cost of $8 a week. There is little more to say about it.” I believe this shows how they don’t think much of the house, but Jim still works in his job to pay money for the apartment. Some may say that he's merely working in a job to get by, but I disagree. I think Jim is working in an unwanted job for very little pay to make a living with Della. If this wasn't the truth don’t you think Jim would give up his job and not try hard like he does to make money to pay for the necessities? So, Jim works in an undesirable job to make a living with Della, out of love, because Jim loves Della. As you can see, in the Gift of the Magi Della and Jim’s actions are influenced by their love for each other and many times the things they do are careless. Jim and Della sacrifice their most prized possessions for each other, Della grows her hair long so Jim will “love her more”, and Jim works in an undesirable job for little pay for Della. All of these things happened out of the love Jim and Della have for each

The touching story “ The Gift of Magi” tells how two people are trying to get the best for the other as much as possible. There are multiple themes related to the story: love is about who you are, not how you look; “giving” is not what you give, it’s why you give. Both characters, Della and Jim tries to give something with anything they have. “The themes of love and generosity work hand in hand with the story’s examination of what it means to be rich or poor (The Gift 71).” They do not care what would cost them, they only care about how much they are given.…

The relationships between the main characters in the two stories “The Gift of the Magi” and “Bluffing” contracts each other. As in the first story, there is no doubt that Della and Jim love each other and the depth of their love is fully shown through their actions. However, in the second story between the characters Liam and Gabriella, their words say that their love for each other is deeper than the ocean, but their actions prove all of their words wrong. It is also questionable if they truly loved each other. If one loves you they can willingly give up the most treasured they have for you because you are worth more than anything they have ever owned.…

The symbolism of The Gift of the Magi by O. Henry, is that sacrificing your most valued possessions for the one you love is the greatest kind of humbleness. In this case, Della thinks her lover will not like her anymore since she cut off her hair. Her husband Jim, specifically states, “I don't think there's anything in the way of a haircut or a shave or a shampoo that could make me like you any less” (Henry 102). Jim is clearly fine with the way she looks even after a haircut. This shows how much they love each other despite the sacrifices.…
