Firstly, they have are different but the stories are also similar in a way. Both of these stories revolve around married couples. Both of the couples are poor. The short stories give clues about their financial struggles. Maupassant tells the story from the wife’s point of view. We learn that Mme Loisel was born into a poor family and because she had no dowry, she married a not so wealthy man. The author tells us that she “grieved incessantly” for the finer things that she could not afford. She was envious of others who had wealth. She was ashamed to visit a well to do school friend. Both of the stories have the theme of wealth, love and greed. The exact extent of each couples monetary poorness is somewhat debatable, though, since one could get the impression that the Young’s are of low working class while Loisels could be considered as part of middle class before the first turn of events. Mathilde is the one greedy for the jewels while Della is not.
