The Ghost Sonata

The play The Ghost Sonata is one of death, horror, and confusion. In the play, not one good thing is seen, but only disaster and disillusion. The Ghost Sonata starts off with a student needing water after assisting injured and dying people all night after the collapse of a house. The Student sees a Milkmaid and asks if she will give him a cup of water. During this time, an Old Man by the name of Jacob Hummel hears the Student conversing with a person that he cannot see. The Old Man later beckons the Student to come to him, telling the Student that he had overheard him talking about how the student had helped the people from the collapsed house. The Old Man eventually gets the Student to go to the Opera and meet the Colonel and his daughter. The Student had always admired the Colonel's house, however, when he was eventually invited inside, he saw that it was something completely different than what he thought. He wants to have the Student get close to the Colonel’s daughter, who is also the Old Man’s daughter, and have the Student eventually marry the young lady. The other part of the man’s plan is to get everybody else out of the house by killing them. The Old Man ruins the Colonel's name by telling him that his family lost their noble name a long time ago and that he is not a Colonel because the Force he fought for was disbanded and all the titles were abolished. The Colonel's wife, a Mummy, had earlier told Hummel that if he exacted revenge on the Colonel that it would not go unpunished. So, after Hummel ruined the Colonel, Mummy had the Old Man hang himself. Thus, one of the reasons The Ghost Sonata is one of death. However, the deaths do not conclude with the Old Man, yet, with the daughter. The Young Lady’s dying words were, “Come on the screen! Quick- I die!” (pg.
