The ghost tells Hamlet that it is his duty to murder Claudius and avenge his father’s death. At first Hamlet tells himself that there is no way he can go through with it, and he even considers suicide. Hamlet, however, comes to the conclusion that if he were to kill himself he would be sent to hell, and he would rather force himself to kill Claudius than go to hell. Once Hamlet brings himself to the idea that he must kill Claudius, it is just a matter of when to act on his idea. At one point in the story, Hamlet finds Claudius praying on his knees with his eyes closed, and he is alone. Hamlet at first thinks this is the perfect time to kill him.
