In Panama we’ve worked closely with the Noble Bugle tribe, an indigenous tribe totaling 200,000 individuals, to develop sustainable projects to increase their quality of life and various business ventures. Currently we are implementing a means to process their rice granules themselves using a diesel powered machine known as a “Pilladora.” This is only one of a multi-pronged approach to helping this tribe however. At the same time we are also working with Panamanian officials to help certify their rice as organic, while developing a water filtration system for their crop that can sustain ponds of fish for consumption.…

While many opponents argue that sustainable energy sources are too expensive, it will cost more money in the future to try and recreate Earth’s services, that are now provided for free. For example, as Suzuki notes, a team of academics at the University of Vermont calculated that nature's services, such as filtering air and water and pollinating plants, would cost 33 trillion dollars annually, while all the world's economies, at the time of the 2004 interview, produced only a little over half of that figure. Therefore, by switching human lifestyle from anthropocentrism to ecocentrism, and doing our part to try to limit our consumption and degradation of the environment, it will save money in the long term. Beginning to save the environment now will also ensure our longevity as a species, allowing us to continue to explore and reach new heights and progress further as a…

According to the U.S Census, there are around 655,000 current African American high school seniors. Yet, when reading the statistics of the Ron Brown scholarship applicant pool, there were only 4,000 students who applied. These 4,000 merely makeup .006 percent of the black seniors in this country, and they shine a light on an area that the Ron Brown Scholar program needs to address. Today, the modern education system is tainted with bureaucratic and oligarchical tendencies that prevents students of color, and low socioeconomic backgrounds from excelling in this highly competitive field.…

I have always been interested in learning about environmental problems and how to do my part in helping them. However, I was unaware of the true devastation of deforestation in places like Puerto Rico until I visited last spring. A part of my school’s curriculum is Interim, which is an opportunity for every student to get off campus and learn in a hands-on way. My junior year, I went to Puerto Rico to learn about deforestation. I went knowing very little of the impact deforestation has on tropical ecosystems; however, I was soon immersed in the jungle- living in tents, going to the bathroom in a humanure toilet, and volunteering every day by building path and planting trees.…

The Earth is currently facing detrimental environmental issues. These issues have been evident for decades; however, many people have continuously denied them to be problematic or even their existence entirely. While these critics have managed to get away with the rejection of these problems for many years, it is no longer deniable that the issue of environmental degradation is very real and in need of immediate action. Much of the population has come to understand this, and have executed a variety of modest attempts to increase environmental sustainability. However, these efforts have demonstrated to be of minimal effect in solving the large-scale issues directly causing the degradation.…
