Introduction
In this week’s assignment, we are asked to go to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) site on Earthquake Hazards and conduct research on earthquakes that had occurred over a seven day period and answer a few questions. First how many earthquakes occurred with a magnitude of greater than 6.0 and how many 4.5 – 6.0 occurred over the week? Second what country outside the U.S. had the most earthquakes over this period? Third where was the most recent earthquake over 4.5, what magnitude was it, how deep was it, and was this shallow, intermediate, or deep? Fourth, explain the type of plate boundary the earthquake from the third question was near and why are earthquakes common to this area? Fifth where was the deepest and the …show more content…
Also we will discuss if earthquakes are common in this region. The plate boundary that was associated with the 20 Oct 14 San Gabriel Ecuador earthquake was the Nazac plate (oceanic tectonic plate) and the South American plate forming a convergent boundary (USGS, 2014). This plate boundary can be very active, but since 1900 till 2012 there have been only approximately 50 earthquakes of 5.5 or greater in Ecuador and only two to three near San Gabriel or this time period (USGS, …show more content…
