Out of lust for revenge, he nearly committed an unthinkable crime, but he stopped himself in the belief that he should show the townspeople mercy. Felsen uses both external and internal conflicts, as well as irony, to reflect the theme.

An example of external conflict would be when the pilot bombed the wheat fields and unintentionally killed the children. The pilot decided he was a "merciful God" so he chose to bomb the wheat fields instead of the houses. He said
