There 's a certain industry that is arguably one of the fastest growing industries at this time, and it 's one that not too many have heard of. It 's also probably one of the most controversial industries, depending on your demographic. The older generation tend to disagree with the growth of this industry because it 's something that was completely unheard of when they were younger. Whereas, the millennials took this once, casual hobby, and are turning it into a career for themselves and are making around six figures for it. Believe it or not, this industry also brings in huge amounts of profit because of the amount of sponsorships and big companies that invest in it to get good marketing to possibly get their marketing to reach different …show more content…
That 's right, these tournaments often pull a much larger than sports competitions such as the World Series, the Super Bowl, and the NBA Finals, often competing for prize pools of millions of dollars. Little to everyone 's knowledge, this is also an industry that has existed since the 1970s and has silently been on the rise through decades. This boasting industry that has been exploding within the past several years is the eSports industry. There are many, many people, especially in today 's society, that will argue that video games are nothing but a waste of time, especially with today 's battle of finding a good, stable career. In today 's day and age, people are putting in more time to video games than ever, due to the fact that it is possible to make a career out of it. The eSports industry is a very important industry because it shows that you can make a living off of something that was once considered a hobby. This industry actually has a very long history going all the back into the 1970s: back into the good days of Space Invaders and Pac Man. In the early days of eSports, there were no multiplayer games to determine the skill level of each individual player, so the way skill level was determined was by getting and beating high scores in these single player games, such as Space Invaders and Pac Man as mentioned before. The earliest known competitive eSport tournament occurred in 1972 at Stanford for the game called Spacewar. The grand prize of offered for the winner of that tournament was a year subscription to Rolling Stone. Because of that tournament, and how well it was received and after earning a much bigger following, the industry leader Atari held a tournament drawing in 10,000 players from across the United States. But, as mentioned before, multiplayer games were non-existent at this point, so what the tournament consisted of was you trying your best to beat the computer and earning the highest possible score you can achieve. After a man named Walter Day foundation an organization called Twin Galaxies to keep track of video game high scores, it was able to gain sponsorship and eventually the record-breaking high scores were published into the Guinness Book of World Records and eventually the Guinness Book of World Records created the Video Game Masters Tournament 1983.
