Have you ever thought about what your name means? Why your parents chose your name? Even in books authors choose character names for a certain reason and not randomly. Usually the name’s meaning helps the readers get a sense of the character’s personality. God, like many authors, chose wisely when choosing the names of the humans in the Bible. Some of the characters have their names assigned to them at birth while some do not receive them until several years later, either their actual name or just a nickname. Additionally, a last name of a given character can hold significance, and the Dead family is no exception. For every character with the last name Dead, it bears significance as they eventually die or are already dead, literally or figuratively.…

Usually a name has the power to define and to possess that which it identifies. Toni Morrison's Song of Solomon names carry biblical references, and can mean anything from liberation to oppression. Morrison has created some great characters with some unusual names like Milkman, Hagar, Pilate, etc. Although these names have biblical references, these names also identify to a certain trait of the character which is kinda unorthodox for a novel. All of Morrison’s characters are African American, and by giving significant names to her characters she has illustrated the vital importance of naming in African American culture.…

Genesis is established as being the beginning of everything and being all good but there is also the portrayal and interpretation of evil in the creation. In the genesis of evil, Dr. Altizer explains that the origin of evil is “unknown and as orthodox as the origin of god” (Altizer 80). The journal explains how Genesis contains several indirect interpretations of the portrayal of evil in genesis. One of the first interpretations of evil is seen when Adam and Eve sinned in Eden and turned away from God causing them to bring sin to the world. Dr. Altizer explains that this concept is true but it absolves God from bringing evil into the world to hold it as Adam and Eve introducing evil into the world.…

One name that we did not find out the true meaning of was Oedipa’s. Oedipa’s name is a reference to the Greek myth Oedipus who according to Encyclopaedia Britannica tried to find his identity after he was abandoned at birth and ended up killing his father and marrying his mother (Encyclopaedia). We can see from the commonality in their names that Pynchon purposely used the name Oedipa; she had to search for answers to the mysteries of the Tristero as Oedipus had to search for his parents. I also believe that Oedipa had to search for her true identity. Oedipa assumes many roles and identities throughout the course of the novel to try and fit into society.…
