Disney, the ‘Female’
Among the three participants, Disney demonstrated the closest conformity to the stereo-type feminine constructions of the society exhibiting love, tender, care, gentle dialogues, and sensitivity and the ideal woman traits (Stets & Burke, 1988). Her online self, exhibited her closest association with her friends and family. Majority of her friends were female and she articulated a gentler and caring online self with her friends. She wants to change the culture and her strong words signify her eager and assertive nature unlike other women who are silent in the injustice to women. Thus, Aishi’s online and offline self articulates a less stereo type feminine traits based on her symbolic consumptions generating meaning about her masculine behaviour.
Further, her Facebook posts acts as a symbol which enables her to articulate the desire of Aishi to speak for marginalized voices.
Through the above wall post, she narrates her perception of being a woman. She perceives that a woman needs to be trust worthy, speaking directly, loyal and helping other women. Reflecting my personal experience of being a woman, I have heard, people accusing woman to be jealous of other woman and backstabbing them. Even Aishi expresses the dark side of women who are labeled by the society as backstabbers by reflecting on her experience. Further analyzing her post, she tries to create the impression that she is not a woman who belongs to the ‘bad category of woman’ but that she tries to help the other women, generating a positive ‘impression’ about her online self through similar symbols of wall
