He said that any of the Eldest Daughters of her Great Grand Father who got the Gem was meant to reign on the throne. Based on the fact that this was fulfilled by Joan, the Emperor said she was to be crowned Queen. Joan was surprised and asked why there was a sudden need to crown her.
The Emperor told her they had waited for many years for this gem to be recovered. He said that Joan should have been on the throne and not him if the Gem had been with her family. He said since the gem was now with Joan; she deserves the throne. He mentioned that Joan was brave and won the war with the Desert Wanderer and the Vampires. She had shown the same strength that made her Great Grand Father a very powerful man in their Kingdom. The Emperor ordered that Joan be crowned the Queen.
The whole Kingdom gathered to celebrate their new Queen. They also brought gifts to show their support. The fish and its life, which is consistently mentioned throughout the story, is a representation of the family’s unity. The narrator first mentions the fish in a flashback at around the same time that she is reflecting back on her memories of her father and their daily routine. The father is the one who brings in the live fish and dumps it in the sink. This is notable because at this point in the narrative, the family is still seen as a cohesive unit and this parallels with how the fish is still alive. The next point in the narrative where the fish is mentioned is right after certain problems are shown to plague the family, such as the obvious language barrier that separates the parents from their children and the problem of the father and the brother’s conflicting attitudes towards the son’s unwillingness to keep hold of his Malaysian heritage.…
