On June 28, 1969 in the hours prior to dawn a riot broke out after police were called to Greenwich NY. Police we’re called because in this time period it wasn’t acceptable to be openly gay. On the first night the police won the battle. The following night more people joined the fight reaching over one thousand people. This movement lasted for three days until finally the police gave up and the protestors won. Protestors marched up and down the streets wearing rainbow and glitter and everything that is stereotypical gay. This march was the first of many pride parades. This riot was one of the first major steps into what is now known as the LGBT community. After this riot, many people were inspired to begin their own support and gay rights groups. Being raised Southern Baptist I always get a little grief from others when I say I’m a Christian. The one thing I immediately get asked is, “how are you friends with gay people”?
