The Gateway House is a non-profit organization that helps to serve mentally ill individuals within the community. Gateway House serves members by opening opportunities to build friendship, participate in work units, and obtain employment and education. Not only does Gatehouse have a clubhouse where members come to meet on a daily basis to participate in the programs offered, it also has several different housing buildings for members who require more assistance. The organization is located in Greenville, South Carolina less than 2 miles from the downtown area with a river walk, a park, shops and restaurants nearby. The site is not far from colleges such as Furman or Bob Jones where some of the employment opportunities for the members of the Gateway House are offered.
The Gateway House’s day to day operations are carried out both by staff and members of the clubhouse. They work together as a team to keep the house functioning lending help and encouragement where it is needed. The field instructor that I am assigned to at this location is Lauren Dean. I entered the agency from the back for the first initial interview. I was greeted by two smiling members and there appeared to be a meeting taking place. I was asked to sign in. I indicated that I had a meeting with Lauren Dean and was directed to the front desk area was I was greeted by more members. I was told Lauren was held up in a meeting and she would be out shortly. A member showed me there was seating in a small foyer near the front door. I would not technically call the area a waiting room. If I recall correctly there were two chairs and on the walls of the foyer were pictures of the housing buildings and a map of sites across the United States that have been trained in the Clubhouse

DJ Cannonball’s weighty statement gets at the specificity of place and the spatial capital that came with having an apartment large enough to host South Shore house parties. It is possible that Black gay males were in search of apartments in South Shore because they offered the space needed for their parities as well as a closeness to and connection within the emerging community. This was a spatial network connected to racial, sexual, and class identity that offered the sort of interconnectedness between bodies and souls that I constantly noticed and felt as a Black Chicagoan during my observations at the various parties I attended with the Black house community. These were spaces where someone felt, included, acknowledged, welcomed, and linked through a synergistic energy that permeated the walls and bodies of those present. This is why house spaces are particularly crucial and require meticulous insights to ensure that the space feels like a house that becomes home for many.…

FFA as a Discourse Community In many ways-specifically,communicating with people in this generation-living by the mantra “out with the old and in with the new” can heavily influence the way people respond to information. We live in a fast pace world where “the next big thing” has already passed you by by the time you take your next breath. With the ever changing trend in ways to communicate with people, discourse communities like Future Farmers of America (FFA) look for ways to communicate with their members effectively. While there are many classic or traditional ways to communicate with its member that are effective, modern FFA is immensely improved when it utilizes all forms of communications both traditional as well as modern technology.…

Communication is of essential importance in any workplace, relationship, and gathering, which creates efficient leadership within a group. Towards the closing of my junior year, I was elected to be one of the few student board members to my school’s National Honor Society. Achieving board member status for this renowned society of students is an eye-opening experience. Adapting to the responsibility that a highly respected board member carries of such a prestigious group truly distinguishes differences between the ordinary member and those who collectively lead the organization. From coordinating induction ceremonies for incoming members, to communicating with local providers for community service events, being a representative of…

The two diagrams demonstrates how heating a house occurs using a pellet stove and a boiler. For a pellet stove to operate, first, wood pellets are loaded in the fuel hopper where it descends to the fuel feed. These pellets are then burned in the combustion chamber and ashes fall in the ash pan below it. Hot air rises and finally distributed through the combustion fan. The smoke from this process goes to the exhaust duct, located in the rear of the machine.…

One example of the success of permanent supportive housing is the Pathways to Housing program in DC. In the DC area, there has been a fifty percent decrease in the amount of affordable housing since 2000, and rental rates have increased significantly (Mukherjee, 2013). There has also been a decrease in funding for Section 8 vouchers. Pathways to Housing DC has helped many homeless people with mental illnesses secure housing. Community-based programs like Pathways to Housing tend to be more effective in providing care for homeless people with mental illnesses than hospital settings, because community-based programs give people with mental illnesses a sense of stability.…

Because I am a Coptic Orthodox Christian, my religion and culture have always been intertwined. However, I used to view my education as apart from them, as there was only one other Copt in my high school and there were none in my elementary or middle school. When I began this semester at NJIT, I realized that I had been missing something for the past thirteen years of my schooling. In just a matter of weeks, I found myself at home within the Coptic community here. I have recognized a few of its main purposes, all of which are evident in the modes and styles of communication: to develop a strong support network, to cultivate a sense of family, and to ease the transition for new students.…
