The Gates Case: Racial Profiling

Racial profiling can bring people down in both a financial and personal way which leads to more racial profiling because being affected in these ways encourages one to continue profiling others as they have anger building up which needs to be released.
The Gates Case is an example of racial profiling. In the Gates Case, A black Harvard professor, Henry Louis Gates Jr., was arrested at his home finally coming home after a long stay in Harvard, by a white police officer, for attempting burglary. “The officer, rather than treat Professor Gates as a respected member of the Harvard faculty, probably expected more illegal behavior from him because he was a black man. Professor Gates, in turn, probably “offered more defiance because the officer was white,” states New York Times. This supports my point that racial profiling can be destructive at a personal level. Gates would not have been so defiant if the officer was black and the officer would not have unnecessarily arrested Gates if he was white. This is one way racial profiling can come into play.

America’s president Obama, being the first black president has a lot of experience with racial profiling. “And I know the bitterness swill of swallowed back anger” says president Obama (nytimes). This supports that if someone has experience being racially profiled, the that person will have more a reason to profile others based on that experience. As what Obama calls it, bitterness towards one another, and that's what is causing

She was handcuffed, put into a jail cell and strip searched when there was neither a warrant nor reasonable suspicion (Warikoo, N. 2013). These types of individuals say that what actually happens is the oppression of whites. Others that disagree on the fact of racial profiling are those that “[say] it is no longer the problem it used to be — that we now live in a post-racial society, and any incidents of racial profiling are conducted by rogue or bigoted individuals” (De La Torre). It is hard to understand the individuals with this mindset, but being a humble and God loving person, the way that I would respond to these assumptions of racial profiling is doing my best to educate those individuals about how much of a prevalent issue it is. I understand that many times because have certain thoughts and beliefs since they honestly do not know how big of an issue something is for a person. I have personally encountered a moment where speaking up on my thoughts and feelings helped someone realize how people actually feel about a certain topic.…

Racial profiling is a problem that has been going on in the United States for far too long. This leads to many problems, such as the accused becoming upset, feeling he/she is being wronged because of race. These feelings may cause the accused to become uncooperative or hostile. When this happens, the officer is then more likely to act aggressively in the situation, which can very easily turn into a slippery slope of unfortunate events.…
