As we go about our daily lives, we engage in social norms although we might not stop to think about what they are, the role they play and how it may affect us if it’s broken. Because of this I was given the task to break a social norm and analyze how society responds. This experiment is referred to as the Garfinkel experiment (taking the name of the sociologist who developed it,) whereby social norms (being unwritten rules that are accepted by society and govern the way individuals i.e. society behave,) are broken and the responses analyzed. These rules are expected to be followed, as such when broken you will receive a response of which generally falls into two categories according to Garfinkel: fear and amusement.
