Sunshine. Suddenly, darkness arises and the light fades. The Vietnamese family from The Gangster We Are All Looking For, by Le Thi Diem Thuy, and the poor African American mother from “Dandelion”, by Perre Shelton, define the American Dream. They sought the American Dream in different ways due to there unlike generation and culture. The Vietnamese family attempts the American culture while African American mother attempt to be accepted by the American Dream. In The Gangster We Are All Looking For, by Le Thi Diem Thuy, a nameless narrator flees Vietnam for America with her father and four “uncles”. The mother from “Dandelion” is not financially stable and not accepted by others in the society. She is the poor dandelion among the rich roses. Furthermore, she is a dandelion in a rose bush but she will always dream of something more than those roses. Since the mother is an African-American woman in a white society, she doesn’t fit in. But she doesn’t need to grasp that idea of motherhood because the love that she gave the poet is more vital than having been wealthier and eventually more acknowledged in the community. While the Vietnamese family from The Gangster We Are All Looking For are struggling to adapt to the American culture. The Vietnamese family traveled to America seeking for a better life but have a hard time speaking English, making wealth, personal issues. Adapting to American culture was difficult for the Vietnamese family because of the change of countries. The American Dream was hard to attain because of all of the sudden change in lifestyle. Since both the characters from the novel and poem come from foreign culture they have hardship accustoming to American
