The Game, Discover Babylon

The game, Discover Babylon, teaches people about the many different characteristics of civilizations in Ancient Mesopotamia. The major characteristics include cities, religion, writing, government, social structure, and art. Each of these characteristics were demonstrated through the game. These characteristics are what make up a civilization. Ancient Mesopotamia was located within the Fertile crescent, in between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. Civilizations from Ancient Mesopotamia invented many different things. For example, the Sumerian civilization created Ziggurats. The game demonstrates this component by letting players play as a scribe in training and decipher tablets. The game also explains that scribes were used to record important information on tablets. These tablets have allowed archaeologists to determine more information about ancient civilizations like the Babylonian civilization. The tablets were important for ancient civilizations too. They allowed for record keeping, the creation of written laws, business transactions, and more. Some ancient civilizations created alphabets that contributed to the creation of our current alphabet. This shows why writing was important to ancient civilizations and why it is important to people today. Government is another aspect of ancient civilizations. Government controls a civilization, making it a crucial part of the civilization. Babylon was ruled by Hammurabi. Hammurabi invented a set of strict laws for people in his civilization to obey. This set of laws is known as Hammurabi’s Code today. Hammurabi’s Code was made to protect people in Babylon. Writing allowed them to remember important information and allowed for us to better understand their beliefs and values. Government was created to protect the people’s rights and make laws. Social structure showed the division between people depending on their jobs. Art expressed the beliefs and values of those in Ancient Mesopotamia.
